Produce your own set design based on the principles you learned in “The Vocabulary of Visual Thinking” and “The Artistry of the Set.” In the end, you will create two drawings to show your set and explain why you made the choices you made.
STEP ONE: Read the play Death and the Kings Horseman and make sure you have a theme and understand the mood of the play.
STEP TWO: Go through the “The Vocabulary of Visual Thinking” and address all of the aspects of expressing themes, ideas, and motifs visually. Consider Line, Shape and Form, Color, Value, Texture, and Space.
STEP THREE: Create drawings of your set. You must include a Painter’s Elevation and a Ground Plan (If you think in 3D and wish to create a model, that is fine.) In your drawings, you will be able to represent some of your thoughts on line, shape and form, Color, Value, and Space. (Texture, you may have to describe.)
STEP FOUR: Explain why you chose your particular elements and how they related to the theme, action, and mood of the play.
What elements must I see?
- Are you incorporating all of the elements of the visual thinking chapter?
- Do you include all of the elements required for each drawing?
- Do you understand the theme, action, motifs, and mood of the play?
- Are you visually attending to the theme, action, motifs, and mood of the play?
- Did you adequately explain your choices?
