Assess what opportunities exist in your own communities to be a part of social/health policy in action.
1. First, you will search for organizational committee meetings which are open to the public or within groups you belong to, to choose a meeting to attend
this week. Several examples could be:
School PTA meetings
School board meetings
Policy committee meetings at your workplace (nursing councils, Magnet meetings, IRB, etc.)
Church or religious organization meetings
Civil organizations in your community
Nonprofit organizations in your committee
Others — check with your instructor
2. Next, make plans to attend a committee meeting which will discuss either a social or health policy issue on the agenda. This covers a very broad range of
issues, including zoning changes, school lunches or activities which affect students’ health needs, public safety issues, etc.
3. Write a brief one-page report which addresses:
What was the organization? What is its mission?
Why did you choose to attend this meeting and what issues were discussed?
How does the issues discussed relate to social or health policy in your community?
Would you suggest that others in your community also attend this kind of meeting and if so, what would they learn?
