Pick a Southern California Indigenous tribe, such as the Tongva, Luiseno, Cahuilla, or Kumeyaay, and research and write a case study. You cannot choose the Yokuts or Chumash tribes as the Sutton text has written a case study on these in the California chapter. The paper should be 4-5 pages plus a References page in MLA format. Your paper will include the following topics for each nation: Origin, Subsistence, Social/Political, Religion, Language, Art, Current Status, and Contemporary issues (detailed below).
Your paper will include the following topics for the Southern California Indigenous nation you choose:
Origin (10 points) – select an origin or other mythology story from the tribe you chose that illustrates the worldview or belief system of that tribe.
Environment (10 points) and Subsistence (10 points) – this area should include a description of the geography of the land the tribe inhabits, their seasonal patterns, foods, housing, clothing, etc.
Social (10 points) and Political (10 points) – describe the tribal government, their kinship patterns, societies, child-rearing practices, warfare issues.
Religion (10 points) and Language (10 points) – describe the tribe’s ceremonial, medicine, and healing practices, art, and language use.
Current status of the tribe today (10 points) – Describe how they are doing and what they are doing. Where do the people live in relation to their traditional homeland? What is their population? What is their political status and/or their economic status?
Contemporary issues (10 points) – Discuss contemporary issues facing the tribe, such as land rights, sovereignty, cultural preservation, and economic development.
