Studies of music in the African diaspora

    Studies of music in the African diaspora may be roughly placed in two camps: one that tries to recover supposedly ephemeral musical practices and another which seeks to explain music's role in the construction of ra.c.iellincl discourse and ideology. Are some of the accounts more convincing or more pressing than others? Why?
