for links to the ads). Write an analysis of the ad that incorporates course readings and concepts (1000 words).
Consider the intended audience, intended meaning, and the social, cultural, political, or economical
connections that can be made. You are not concerned with the ad’s effect on the audience – this is very difficult
to accurately measure and is a topic better studied by marketing executives. We are interested in a critical
approach to the ad you have chosen. Consider its representation of ideas, images, characters, peoples, etc.
and why those representations may have been chosen.
You can find some suggestions on how to layout your assignment in this document.
Here are some ideas to stimulate your analysis of the ad. You do not have to use any of these, or you may use
a combination of a few of them in your critique:
representations of masculinity, femininity, age, class, race, ethnicity, sexuality etc.
representations of “old” age
consumption as citizenship
heteronormativity
co-option of environmentalism
co-option of female empowerment
postcolonial analysis of the exotic
representations of the American Dream; neoliberalism; “democracy”; etc.
representations of technology
framing of the family
selling the concepts of the body, or atheleticism
