  PMI Process Groups, Knowledge Areas & Individual Processes The Project Management Institute (PMI) has identified five distinct process groups as part of their standard project management methodology. These process groups are Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, and Closing. The PMI also recognizes nine knowledge areas – Integration Management, Scope Management, Time Management, Cost Management, Quality Management, Human Resource Management (HRM), Communications Management Risk Management and Procurement management – which cover the core aspects of any project.

Within each knowledge area there will be individual processes that must be followed in order to ensure successful completion of the overall project. For example within scope management there are processes for defining scope (defining what is included in the work involved), creating a Work Breakdown Structure (organizing tasks into smaller components so they can be managed more effectively), verifying scope (ensuring all aspects were completed correctly) and controlling scope (managing changes to the original plan). Of these nine Knowledge Areas I feel that Risk and HRM tend to require the most attention from a Project Manager due to their complexity or critical nature. With regards to risk management this encompasses identifying potential risks which could impact on delivery; assessing their probability; developing strategies for dealing with them should they occur; monitoring existing risks throughout implementation stages; responding quickly if required. It is only through proper analysis of potential risks that an effective response strategy can be put in place resulting in better outcomes for stakeholders. Similarly HRM requires effective communication between Project Managers and team members as well as a positive working environment both mentally and physically in order to foster motivation among individuals which directly affects how efficiently projects progress towards completion . 3-Legged Stool Of Project Mangement The 3-legged stool metaphor references the three crucial elements necessary for successful Project Mangement: people skills/HR processes , technical expertise/processes ,and tools or systems available within an organisation. Each leg supports one another but each leg must also remain balanced otherwise it becomes destabilised by too much weight being placed on one side over another. People Skills/HR Processes: This leg implies having strong interpersonal skills when communicating with team memebers while maintaining good working relationships especially when engaging stakeholders who may have different priorities from those of your own team’s needs . Moreover an effective understanding of HR principles such as recruiting staff based on aptitude rather than simply experience allows you to build teams who best suit particular goals or objectives involved in projects . Technical Expertise/Processes: Technical skill is essential for managing any sort of complex project requiring high levels of accuracy , detail orientated problem solving , data collection & analysis capabilities etc..
