Choose a protest event (this can be a one-time protest or protests that took place in a specific location over
two or more days (i.e. protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin or Black Lives Matter protests in Toronto) or an activist
group or community being policed in some way (for example, the 1990 Oka crisis, surveillance of groups
organizing against pipelines in Canada, or the policing of camps and road blockades in Wet’suwet’en territory).
You can focus on any event or site from the past 40 years.
Outline the key aspects of the event. Who is involved? What is the relevant context? What policing tactics or
procedures are present? What legal aspects are involved (land rights, sovereignty, laws related to property
destruction or public order, right to assemble, etc.).
Provide an analysis of the activities, participants, legal aspects, and issues raised. This is the most important
part of the assignment.
