The correlation between drug and mental illness in prison.

1) Prepare a PowerPoint (PPT) presentation which explains the topic and its importance to corrections. PPT’s need to have concise information (titles, bullets, photos) presented in an appealing manner. Minimum of 25 PowerPoint slides or more.

2) Prepare an MS-Word document that narrates each slide as if you are speaking to an audience of correctional professionals. The narrative will expound on the slide’s information.

3) Prepare an APA formatted Reference List for the references and other sources of information you used. Please NOTE that you cannot use any slides that contain copyright materials (photos, cartoons, drawings, etc.) unless you have written permission from the author to use it. You must submit a copy of that written authorization as an attachment to your slideshow. Failure to abide by the copyright laws will result in a grade of “0” for the presentation and potential civil and criminal legal ramifications by the owner. You can choose any topic related to prisons or jails.

Just direct your slides and narrative towards how a correctional manager would deal with it. What should a Warden know about this topic, and what recommendations are appropriate for managing this topic. Make your topic-specific and narrowly focused. I will provide feedback on whether your topic is appropriate or if it needs some modification. One of the biggest reasons for rejection is that the topic is too large in scope. For example, instead of “Managing Prison Gangs” which would about 499 PowerPoint slides, restrict it to “Managing the Dirty White Boy gang” which can be done in about 25 slides or less.

Here are some examples to give you an idea about what type of topics are acceptable. Examples include procedures for notifying an inmate of a death in his family How to prevent “romantic relationships” between staff and inmates Gathering gang intelligence from inmates Preventing abuses from jailhouse lawyers (writ writers) following Johnson v Avery Look through your textbooks and library articles for ideas.

As you develop your project, make sure that you only use professional sources – peer-reviewed journal articles, research books on prisons and jails, interviews with correctional administrators, etc. Present it as if you are giving a talk to Wardens at the American Correctional Association (ACA) conference.
