You have been contracted to work for DesignCO. This brief is from Susan, the Creative Director, and is a project for a regular client of DesignCO.
Project Brief
We have been asked to submit design ideas for the creation of a set of collectable cards for the Collectable Playing Card Company (CPCC). This will be the third time that they have come to us for some unique designs.
CPCC is looking for ideas that are fresh, their main stipulation is that the designs that we present are:
New – never been seen before
Unique – very different from your standard deck of playing cards
Interesting – they must capture the viewer/users imagination in some way
In the current run of collectable cards CPCC has decided that they are happy to see card designs that are either:
Playing cards
Tarot cards
CPCC has stipulated that the design is to be either:
Playing cards – a full deck consisting of 52 cards, 4 suits, 2 jokers or wild cards, 1 card which describes the
design, 1 package design. At this stage you only need to design a selection of sample cards.
Tarot cards – a full deck consisting of 78 cards, 4 suits, 22 major arcana and 56 minor arcana cards, 1 card
which describes the design, 1 package design. At this stage you only need to design a selection of sample cards.
Size, theme, print and finish has been left up to the designer to determine. I’m really pleased to be able to give the project to you for the concept and prototype development. You will work up three different concepts and present to them for review. Then you will develop your prototypes. After you have received feedback on your prototypes, you will present your designs to your colleagues for feedback and suggestions on the final development of your designs.
The concept requirements for the review meeting are:
3 distinctly different concepts
Front and back of a picture card or major arcana
Design theming for each of the 4 suits
Once a design direction is decided upon you will develop the prototype cards. When the prototype is locked down the team will contribute to the creation of the rest of the full deck.
Remember you only need to design a selection of sample cards for the initial prototype and your final designs.
The prototype requirements are:
Front and back of 1 picture card or major arcana
Front and back of 1 number card or minor arcana
Front and back of a card that describes the design (this is a non-functional card that gives information and a
description of the deck of cards – like an introduction)
Design for the packaging of the card deck
