The game Florence

Play the game Florence, which is available on IOS and Android platforms. You may purchase your own copy for $2.99 at the App Store or Google Play. Most people will be able to complete this game in 30 minutes– an hour should be more than enough time.

Florence is an Australian young woman with Chinese ancestry. The game is an interactive story about life and about love. Gameplay allows players to experience the thoughts, feelings, growth and growing pains she experiences. As you play, notice how you feel as you work through each task.

Once you have finished playing the game, your job is to analyze the story based upon our study of John Gottman’s research and other topics addressed in the first half of our class. In order to successfully complete this assignment be sure you have finished our Gottman readings and watched/taken notes on both segments of the video shown in class.

As you play the game, consider the following questions which you will answer for this assignment:

  1. Consider all of the levels of the Sound Relationship House. Relate each level to Florence’s experiences in the game.
  2. Consider other information you have taken notes on from Gottman’s “Making Relationships Work” video and your Gottman chapter readings. In what other ways can you apply Gottman’s research (bids for connection, the Four Horsemen, the critical ratio, foundations of friendship and romance) to the “Florence” game?
  3. Have any of your own life experiences, or those of your friends, been similar to Florence’s story? If so, how? Do you think culture, environmental factors, ideas about gender roles, or any other factors in society impacted her story?
