Now that we have finished reading Into the Wild, you will develop an essay that explores one of the two options
below.
Option A: Using the Ch. 15 Silent Discussion as a starting point, argue the degree to which you think the author, Jon
Krakauer, can be objective in his storytelling. How much do you find that Krakauer’s similarity to McCandless and
others strengthens or weakens his ability to tell their stories impartially? Develop a thesis statement around this
question and use evidence from the book to support your claim.
Option B: Using the multiple narratives involved in Into the Wild, make an argument about a motif you’ve become
interested in while reading the book. Develop a thesis statement around that motif and use evidence from the book to
support your claim. We’ve listed some options below, but, if you have an idea that isn’t on this list, talk to your
teacher for approval.
● Family/relationships
● Personal identity/growth
● Resilience
● Mental health
● Survival
● Nature
● Freedom (from societal norms)
● Risk/benefits
