  1. How might understanding the 6 cultural dimensions developed by Edward T. Hall help us to communicate better with other cultural groups? Define describe one of the dimensions in your own words and provide an example.
  2. Select one of the videos listed below (They can be found on Ted.com and Youtube and in the Culture Unit Slides). Provide a synopsis of what is the main idea and how it relates to the way culture impacts communications/intercultural communication:

  3. There are four stages in creating perceptions. Select one of the four stages (selecting, organizing, interpreting, and remembering) to explain in your own words. Explain also how perception may be subjective at this stage.
  4. Elaborate on one way in which we can improve interactions with people who are culturally different from us? Be specific in your answer and be sure to discuss the impact this may have.

  1. There are many reasons why we pick the people we chose to be in relationships with, as discussed in our unit reading. Using an example from your life (or from someone you know, or from a movie…), elaborate on one of those reasons. How did this factor facilitate building a relationship?
  2. Relational messages communicate important information about relationships. What are relational messages? Provide an example of a relational message. How can we use relational messages to build and maintain strong relationship?
  3. When examining a relationship, we can look at it from the perspective of dialectical tensions or from the perspective of the stages. How do these two approaches differ and why is either useful?
  4. Select one of the dialectical tensions to elaborate on. Provide an example.
