Respond to both posts in your own words by either agreeing/disagreeing with their points and stating why or why not.
1) 1. How does the information you gleaned from the videos and what you read square with your prior knowledge about the 1960s? Your response can be based on your own knowledge, understanding and perceptions.
I think that the sixties is a fascinating time in history as a lot of huge changes came about in our country. It was a time of mass “rebellion” with many things like civil rights protests and anti-war protests. It is a really powerful decade for our country as a lot of change was made possible for the country by these protests and movements.
- What events or other historical observations from the videos and readings stood out in your mind as most significant? Briefly explain your answer.
I think the thing that stood out the most was the Kennedy assassination. The fact that the president was killed in broad daylight riding in a car is crazy. The reaction that it must have had from people all over the country would be incredible. The fact that LHO was also killed on the way to his trial is also crazy. If something like that happened today the internet would blow up.
- What things do you think should have been highlighted that you believe would have warranted mention? Why?
I think the Cuban missile crisis should have been talked about in more depth. I think it was a terrifying event in our history and possibly the closest we have come to a nuclear war.
- What other observations do you wish to share about things you think should have been highlighted?
I think the civil rights act is one of the biggest things to ever happen in our country and I think it needs to be talked about more in general. It shows that real change can happen and it was a huge step forward for America.

I know that I say it in all of my other discussion posts thus far, but I honestly didn’t have a great knowledge of the 1960’s. It’s been a while since I have taken a history class and if you don’t “use it you lose it”.
- What events or other historical observations from the videos and readings stood out in your mind as most significant? Briefly explain your answer.
The assassinations of civil rights leaders stood out to me. Dr. Martin Luther King was shot to death in Memphis, Tennessee. Another event that stood out to me was the war in Vietnam. The draft began in 1964 and there were a lot of American casualties from the war.
- What things do you think should have been highlighted that you believe would have warranted mention? Why?
As previously stated in the first question, I don’t have a large array of knowledge from the 1960’s so I’m not sure what else I would be able to add to the list of significant events. I think the resources provided for the discussion did a great job of highlighting meaningful events, and there were many of them during this time period.
- What other observations do you wish to share about things you think should have been highlighted?
The only other observation I have to make for this discussion is that I did not realize that there were so many different significant events during the 1960’s. After reading through the articles and watching the video on YouTube it really surprised me how many events occurred.
