WOMEN & SPORTS

Scenario: Imagine that you are taking Communications 422 (Media Effects), and the class has been studying ways in which mass media (television, movies, music, internet, etc.) and culture influence each other. The instructor has asked the class to write an essay about the relationship between the media, female athletics, and American culture.
Specifics: Read and think about the ideas and issues raised in the readings discussed in class about the current situation for female athletes in the United States. Specifically, consider the following quote from “Gender Stereotyping in Televised Sports:”
“The way in which television [media] covers, or fails to cover, women engaged in athletics affects the way in which female athletes are perceived and also tells us something about the status of women in our [US] society” (Duncan et al).
Organize and compose an essay that responds to the above quote in the following ways:
• Describe specific ways in which the media cover women athletes or female athletics. What does this coverage communicate about the status of women in the US? Use specific real examples.
• Describe specific ways in which the media fails to cover women athletes or female athletics. What does this lack of coverage communicate about the status of women in the US? Use specific real examples.
• The validity of Duncan’s quote rests primarily on one idea: The media coverage of women’s athletics accurately reflects the status of all women in the US. Evaluate the validity of this idea.
The essay that you write should be well researched, fact-based, documented, and written from a third person perspective. The essay should contain a thoughtful and specific thesis, well-organized paragraphs, and an abundance of evidence and explanation from reputable academic sources. Furthermore, the reasoning of the essay should be logical, and the essay should be free of mechanical errors.
Quotes: Students are required to include eight quotes/statistics/paraphrases from eight different reputable academic sources. The quotes should only be a maximum of two typed lines in length. The quotes should not “stand alone” and should be incorporated into the text of the essay as per MLA format. Furthermore, the source of each quote should be documented on a separate Works Cited page.
Specifics: The essay should be no longer than ten typed double-spaced pages.
