Part A
First, read as much of Yuval Noah Harari’s 21 Lessons for the 21st Century as you can. At a minimum, you must read at least three (3) different chapters–any you wish.
Then post Summary, Quote, and Paraphrase notes for these three chapters (one set for each chapter, as usual) to the Harari Notes assignment here.
For each chapter, write out one Question you’d like to ask Harari, as well. This question may lead you to an interesting topic and thesis proposal.
Part B
Topic Proposal: Potential Research Question(s) & Working Thesis:
- Tell me what you want to write about. First, note the chapter you chose in Harari, and explain why. Justify your selection in terms of your own interests and what you hope to gain or learn along the way.
- Then formulate a research question derived from the material. Take some time to explore GaleSearch and Gale in Context: Opposing Viewpoints on the topic. What additional sources have you found? List your potential sources by author and title – and annotate briefly with your sense of how the source will help in critical analysis of the topic.
- Write out a working thesis. Remember that a thesis is focused, specific, assertive, and invites critical thinking and debate. It previews your take on the topic, and spell out the stakes–why this topic is worthy of our attention. [A thesis is not a statement of simple fact or a generalization about the topic or how you plan to write the paper.]
