Advertising Demographics

Broadcast television is characterized as “advertiser driven.” Programs are selected to reach a specific demographic group that advertisers want to
reach or “target.”
Your Task o’ the Week is:
Watch TWO television programs this week that appear on different Commercial or Cable Networks. Then, make a list of the commercials found within
the airing of each of these two programs. For example: Hypothetically, if Will & Grace airs from 8-8:30 p.m., make a notation of each of the
commercials that appears within that time frame of 8-8:30 p.m.
Provide the name of each program, the day and time of the original broadcast (if viewed at a later time from a recording) and the Network and station
channel in your area on which each show appeared.
As a Communications Practitioner of Broadcasting and Advertising, provide a summary of what you surmise the type of commercials aired within
each program tell us about the demographics of the intended audiences for those programs.
EXPLAIN WHY you believe the program and the commercial products/services is or is not appropriately targeted to the demographic audience you
identified in your summary.
To review: You will submit an attached document that includes the following–>

  1. Name of each program, the day and time of the original broadcast (if viewed at a later time from a recording) and the Network and station channel
    in your area on which each program appeared
  2. A list of the commercials (products/services) that appeared in each program
  3. A 100-200 word summary of the target audiences based on your review of the types of commercials aired in each program
  4. A 250-word explanation WHY you believe each program and the commercials of products/services advertised within each program is or is not
    appropriately targeted to the demographic audience you identified in your summary.
    This can be fun! Remember, your goal is to Sell, Tell, and Tag your product/service to make it memorable for a specific demographic audience by
    matching it to a program or programming strategy of their interest! It’s both a crap shoot and a gamble but, as you will learn through your degree
    studies, research is key!
