In the past, academic institutions have largely avoided studying popular music. Their claims were that it was inferior, and as educated people, we should only be studying the best of the best, which largely meant Classical music, which is much more complex and cerebral, and which values the act of actual music making over the mere act of making money. As people paying a great deal of money and going into debt, should you be wasting your time studying music that used to be seen as ear candy…as the equivelant of a musical Big Mac? We’ll end this course on Miley Cyrus — which is also where we began. Do you really feel good about spending nearly $40 an hour to talk about this stuff?
