Canada since Confederation

Read over the two documents, “Excerpts from T.C. Keefer’s Philosophy of Railroads” and “D’Arcy McGee Speech.” Written before the building of the railway and confederation, they were part of the campaigns for the projects.

Drawing on this list of propaganda techniques and on your understanding of how confederation and the railroad benefited some and hurt others, please write up an analysis and opinion, about 4-5 pages, or 1,200-1,500 words, of Philosophy of Railroads and McGee’s speech. It is an Argument Paper. Don’t need the cover page and reference. The paper only needs an in-text citation. For example, (Keefer, 49)

Here are some questions you should cover: Are you convinced by their arguments? Do they use propaganda techniques? Who are they trying to convince? Who do they ignore or disregard? Knowing what you know about Canadian history, would you endorse their views? What counter-arguments might be used against them? Drawing on ideas and material from the lectures is critical for this assignment. (Border issues in Canadian history)
