Class matters

Class is a major aspect of social location in this country, a way through which social status is determined.
Class matters because where we fit in the social structure of a society based on class determines our access
to material resources and shapes our consciousness, how we think, and our life chances and possibilities.
Class matters are rendered invisible in a way that mystifies social relations so that we remain oblivious to how
power operates to keep economic privilege in the hands of the few at the expense of the many. This
assignment asks you to locate your class position and class consciousness by determining how you fit into the
labor market, what your family values regarding class position and social status, and what meaning class has
for you individually.
