Exam 2-Spring 2016 Part B-Take Home Exam
Instructions: For the take home portion of Exam 2, answer each of the items below. You must accurately cite Morgan (2016) and the class PowerPoints to support your arguments. Do not cite Morgan when referring to the facts of the case itself. If you don’t know how to cite in APA style, go to https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/
One exception: To cite PowerPoints from this class for this exam, please use this format: PowerPoint Unit #, slide #. For example: I recommend this offender receive house arrest. House arrest is typically used with low-risk adults (PowerPoint 6a, slide 5), and based on…….this offender is a low-risk offender.
Exams must be typed, singled-spaced, stapled, 10 or 12 inch Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman font. The exam is due by 11:30pm on March 1. Late exams will be reduced by one letter grade per day, beginning immediately after the due date and time previously noted. (40 points total)
Case 1. (17 points) Read Case Study #5 about John on page 96 of Morgan (2016).
Part A: You are John’s probation officer. Discuss the following:
1. What type of probation do you recommend for this offender? Must include a discussion of the person’s likelihood of recidivism (failure).
2. Outline the probation conditions for this offender, including at least one intermediate sanction to be served as part of his probation, as well as one special condition of probation.
3. What options are not appropriate for this offender, and why?

Part B: Fast forward 2 years. He has violated probation a number of times. In the past 6 months, he has had trouble paying her fines, once failed to register his new address, failed to show up for 2 of his appointments with you, and once tested positive for marijuana use (which he admitted to without any lies). This last time, he wrote a check knowing there was not enough money in his account to cover it.

Case 2. (10 points) Read Case Study #1 about Joyce on page 127 of Morgan (2016).
As Joyce’s institutional parole officer, you are tasked with preparing the parole plan and investigation to submit to the parole board. As such, you must make a recommendation as to whether or not she should be paroled.
1. Be sure to address the issues that parole board members consider when determining parole.
2. Discuss the likelihood of success and why/why not.
3. Make recommendations for parole conditions, just in case she is released on parole, including special conditions.
Case 3. (8 points) You have been a probation/parole officer for 10 years. You are asked to talk to a senior criminology class at the local university about what it is like to work as a probation/parole officer. A student asks you to discuss the negative issues of being a probation/parole officer.
1. What do you tell them? You must discuss a minimum of 4 negative issues you face as a probation/parole officer.
2. What is one potential positive aspect of doing this job that you can communicate to these students, so they do not go away thinking the job is all negative. (Imagine that if you were a PPO what some of the great things about the job might be…what might make the job worthwhile, even though there are some negative aspects to it.)
