Description

As we have seen this week, the Hip Hop Movement is a culture, a radical artistic expression of emotion and storytelling by marginalized voices. Afrika Bambaataa’s five elements of hip hop – MCing, DJing, Breaking, Graffiti, and Knowledge – intersect as a socio-cultural, intellectual, and political movement, centralizing marginalized voices of nonwhite youth. In dance, hip hop is an umbrella term including many different styles of dance born in various regions around the US. It is important to recognize the multiplicity of ideas, styles, and regions these dances come from.
