Essay Writing

Basically in this order, but however you want to organize it, I want you to choose an essay that you have already completed and then:

1. Explain the process of how you went about writing/drafting/completing the essay
(including the 3 stages of the writing process, an alternative or personal writing process,
problems or difficulties encountered with that process, and how you incorporated
feedback in your revisions if applicable).

2. Critique your writing process in this essay (what worked well and what needs
improvement; you can discuss if you considered or put into practice any of the
suggestions from Writing With Power and/or The Norton Sampler).

3. Identify and examine the specific expository mode (or modes) you used in the essay
(narration, description, definition, classification, comparison and contrast, process
analysis, causation— “first this happened, then this happened†etc.

4. Critique/reflect on your use of the various (specific and general) modes of expository
writing in the essay (what was effective and what possibly needs improvement—how or
why in both instances).
