historical narrative

Order Description

Your task for the third essay is to write a paper in which you examine some event or time through the eyes of a primary source. The essay should be 10 pages long. The essay should also follow MLA guidelines in terms of formatting, i.e. 12 pt. font, double-spaced, regular margins, etc. Please refer to our discussions and/or look up the Purdue University Online Writing Lab (OWL) or your textbook for MLA specifications.

For this assignment, you will write a historical narrative based on primary sources like those discussed by Linda Simon in her essay The Naked Source. An interview with an actual person should comprise the most significant part of your narrative; however, other acceptable (and necessary) primary sources include diaries, old news reports, town records, archives, or photographs. You may also use books as secondary sources. In general, you should avoid internet sources, but if you think you’ve found one that is useful and appropriate, please submit it for my approval. Including your interview, you should have no less than five sources.

Think of the assignment as writing a story from the past. Your purpose is to illuminate some event, place, person, or group of people for your reader. Your narrative could be about some important battle during WWII, but it could also be about your family, and the story of how your grandparents immigrated to the United States. Perhaps the town where you grew up faced a unique crisis at some point in your or your parents’ life. Perhaps you know someone who knows someone who played professional basketball in Russia. The point is that the topic of your paper need not have affected the course of world events. Your objective is to investigate something or someone that interests you, and then report back on your findings.
