Everyone – since we are going to be online the next few weeks, we’re going to have to do quizzes and tests an entirely different way. They will be less about memorization and facts, and more about writing and comparisons. They will be “open book” – feel free to use your textbook and your notes. You are not required to go beyond the textbook and notes, but you are welcome to do so, if you wish. If you do, put any direct quotes in quotation marks, and list your sources at the end. Just copy in the URL from any website, or list the author, title and date for any books or other publications. Source format is not an issue, but failing to put direct quotes in quotation marks is plagiarism.
Quiz 4 will count 20 points, as for the other quizzes. Write from one page (minimum) to two pages (maximum) about the topic (see below). This means one to two pages of text, in a 12-point clear font, double spaced, with one-inch margins.
Do this assignment as a google doc. File name should be: quiz4-section (a for morning class, b for afternoon class)- your last name and first initial – for example – Quiz4-A-ciganickj. Share it with me so that I can edit it – I will make comments and grade directly on the google doc. Email me any problems or questions. The quiz is due by Tuesday morning 8am for both classes. Early submissions are encouraged – go for it.
Quiz 4 will be a “test run” before we attempt to do something similar on a more major test, Test 2, coming up. On Test 2 we would have a selection of various topics to choose from. More info to follow, but there will be a review of some kind before we attempt Test 2.
Topic for Quiz 4:
On following page are examples of paintings from two time periods: One is from Rococo, and one is Neoclassical. For each painting, describe it briefly in terms of painting style and theme (subject matter). Then compare the two paintings. List the differences between the two periods and be specific – for example, don’t say “color”, but say what is different about the color between the two paintings. You should be able to find at least four differences between the two (there are more).
For each time period, also list one other work of art (from class or your textbook) that you believe exemplifies the style and spirit of the time period. Explain why.
Conclusion: Briefly state which time period you prefer, and why. There is no wrong answer, as long as you give a thoughtful reason for your choice.
