We shall look closely at the first four of the eight photographs in the He/She series available in the Later Work section at www.nancyburson.com. You are to determine the gender of the faces. As you will notice, the gender of these faces is ambiguous. In the discussion, we shall examine specific features of the faces and try to determine the gender—male or female. Each of us will provide at least one original response to the four faces. After the discussion, we shall write a short paper discussing any three of the eight faces.

Short Paper 1: While participating in the discussion, each of us will write a short essay on three of the four faces. In your essay, you should first describe in detail the faces, so someone who has never seen them can visualize them, and then identify the gender and race or ethnic background of each face giving specific reasons to support your position. The essay should have an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Spend no more than 2 hours on writing the essay. The essay is to be about 3 pages typed double space.
