Pop culture

Throughout this quarter, you will be working on pieces of your practicing criticism paper for our class. This paper invites you to become the critic and analyze a “text” of pop culture using rhetorical and critical methods.
The first step in writing your practicing criticism paper will be the proposal of your chosen pop culture text and method. This is your opportunity to focus on a part of pop culture that is particularly interesting to you and analyze the variety of meanings in-depth. In this proposal, please include:
• 1 well-written paragraph proposing your pop culture “text” and chosen critical rhetorical method of analysis o NOTE: even though we have not explored specific methods yet in class at this point, you can look forward to chapters 4 & 5 to see your options and skim through some of the characteristics of each (culture-centered criticism, Marxist criticism, feminist criticism, psychoanalytic criticism, visual rhetorical criticism, narrative criticism, media-centered criticism). You may find that you decide to adjust the method (prior to your writing about the method later in the quarter), but you should keep the same text throughout this project. o You should also write briefly about: ■ Why you chose the “text” (what is your connection to it, etc.)? ■ What is the value in analyzing this particular text? ■ What is some relevant context needed to understand the text itself? ■ Start thinking through some of the many choices you have to make as a critic-discrete/diffuse text? Original/new context? Etc. (this week’s readings can be helpful for this) • Please submit this document on Canvas o Double spaced, 12 pt font, APA format
