Pre-laboratory Preparation Prior

1. Why is it necessary to equalize water levels in the buret and the leveling funnel? (You may not be allowed to perform this lab experiment until you can answer this question.)
2. Explain why the hydrogen gas collected from the reaction of the metal with acid is referred to as “wet” hydrogen gas.
3. Perform the following sample calculation: Suppose you react 0.0706 g of an unknown which gives one mole of hydrogen gas for each mole of metal. If you collect 29.87 mL of dry hydrogen at 298 K and Pm. = 787 tort, calculate the molar mass of the metal. If the unknown may be any metal in the periodic table, what is the identity of your unknown?
4. When the metal sample reacts with acid, the gas evolved will be collected over water; the gas is said to be “wet.” What is the composition of “wee gas? Elow can the partial pressure of hydrogen be obtained from the coral pressure of wet gas? From where will you obtain the necessary data to determine the pressure of hydrogen gas?
