Reaction to Recent Public Policy Influences

For better and at times for worse, we are experiencing significant social and political events each week. On the
positive side:
The month of June is nationally recognized as Pride Month for those from the LGBTQ Community.
June 19th is recognized as Juneteenth, the commemoration of the date slavery legally ended in the last stateTexas in 1865.
Less positive is the historic fact that the Emancipation Proclamation actually made slavery illegal on January
1st, 1863. This means that two years and 6 months after this became law, humans were still held in slavery
because individual states would still not adhere to the law.)
As recently as this past week, the current presidential administration has created a policy to strike down
medical care and protections for Transgendered American citizens, as a pandemic continues to remain out of
public health control in many areas.
Today (6/15/20) a Supreme Court decision announced protections for members of the LGBTQ that had most
recently been in jeopardy.
The Black Lives Matter Movement has the long overdue attention and action of businesses, civic and sports
leaders as a result of individual and community responses to issues of brutality in law enforcement.
Regional and political differences are impacting the adherence to CDC guidelines for pandemic responses.
All of the above impact the rights, resources and actual lives of American citizens and others who have come
to live in our nation. And it’s only Monday. We are truly living in life-changing times, and this and other newly
created assignments are intended to encourage you to look more deeply into the influences and actions that
are impacting formal and evolving public policy.
For the actual Written Assignment 3-3 you are asked to do the following:

  1. Please select one of the bullet point topics above to do additional research and discussion of.
  2. Please create a list of 10 facts or talking points about the topic.
  3. Each fact or talking point should numbered separately and should include a full paragraph or more of
information that distinctly separates it from the others.
  4. You have a wide range of directions to go with this-you can choose to address the history of any related

    etc.

the 10th point, though you are welcome to add such visuals to all of the assignment.
