Consider the broader material covered in your lecture on U.S. slavery in the 19th century before writing this paper. Once you have done
so, then you want to address the following questions based on your reading of Richard Furman’s essay.
Carefully read Richard Furman’s Defense of Slavery. Then, in a well organized paper, briefly introduce him and his essay. Then explain how Furman
attempted to use the Bible to justify slavery? What historical arguments did he make? In what ways did he claim that slavery improved the life of the
slave? Make sure to provide plenty of examples from the reading in your response.
Remember, your goal here is not to write a rebuttal of Furman’s arguments, which from a modern perspective are obviously quite troublesome and
problematic, but rather you want to seek to understand how Christians in the southern U.S. attempted to rationalize the owning of slaves at the time
and explain those rationalizations through your professional and sober analysis of Furman’s efforts
