Questions:
The following questions should be taken into consideration when analyzing the work, and they should be used as a guideline when you are writing your paper. I expect your paper to be written in essay format, which includes an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.
1) Identify the work. Who is the architect? The title? The date? Do you know the materials that were used? For what purpose was the building used when it was constructed? Is it similarly utilized today?
2) Are we aware of anything about the architect’s life or personality that may have affected his/her creation of the work?
3) How does the piece fit into the history of art? Compare it to one other building that we have either seen in class or that is pictured in your textbook, and discuss how it is similar, different,
typical, or uncharacteristic of the period in which it was produced.
Note: both works should have elements in common and elements about them that are different. To compare two works means to discuss their similarities, and to contrast two works mean to analyze the differences.
4) During what time period and where was the work created? Discuss what was going on in the cultural, political, economic, or social spheres at the time it was produced which may, or may not have affected its production.
5) Discuss the architect’s philosophy of building. Did he/she concentrate on residential, public,
or business architecture? Were certain materials important to the architect’s style?
6) Was the piece widely accepted by critics and the public at large? Was the architect’s work in general perceived favorably, or unfavorably at the time in which it was produced? Why do you think this was the case?
7) In what ways did the architect contribute to the history of architecture? Was he/she innovative and creative, innovating a style never seen before? If not, is there anything unique about the structure that might distinguish it from others like it?
8) Did the architect take into account the fact that there are earthquakes in California? Examine how he/she utilized materials and methods of construction to ensure their structure would sustain as little damage as possible. How did the building fare in the 1906 and or 1989
earthquake?
