Education is primarily a matter left to the states. To gain a thorough knowledge of special education law and
education law, you will investigate New York State laws, regulations, rules, and guidelines that implement the
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, No Child Left Behind/ Every Student Succeeds Act and other
education-related matters. This information can be found on website of NY state Department of Education and
state law and regulation sections in law libraries.
Many students receive accommodations or modifications on their IEP as part of their special education
services. Accommodations and Modifications are two separate things. Define accommodation as it relates to
students with disabilities. Define modification as it relates to students with disabilities.
The New York State Alternate Assessment (NYSAA) is designed for a specific population. Who is eligible to
complete the NYSAA? What skills need to be measured and how are they measured? When students have
taken NYSAA pathway what certification do they receive as proof of their schooling and skills?
