Watch the film The Shining. Please be aware that this is an R-rated film and includes graphic language, violence, and several scenes of nudity. If you feel this content will be too upsetting for you to watch, please let us know beforehand. Regardless, you can still participate in the discussion by referencing this week’s reading “Heirs Through Fear.” Simply focus on Question Prompt d.

Also another version is currently available onyoutube (Links to an external site.), where you can access individual scenes or watch the entire film. (Unfortunately, there are no subtitles in this version).
  2. After viewing the film and/or reading Darryl Caterine’s article “Heirs Through Fear,” please post your reaction in at least 300 words and reply to at least one other student’s post. Using the following questions to frame your reaction:

b. Shining: What aspects of our past might the ‘haunted’ hotel embody?

c. Shining: How does the film depict the American family?

d. How do films like The Shining, according to Caterine, invoke the theme of “cursed ground” to discuss deeper aspects of American identity?
