Sustainability and corporate social responsibility.

Not everyone is a champion of sustainability. From governments to CEOs to media, there is considerable resistance to change, especially where costs seem to outweigh benefits. In an article published two weeks
prior to the 2012 Rio+20 Earth Summit on Sustainable Development, National Post columnist Peter Foster slams United Nations’ initiatives over the past twenty years as “devious”, “ridiculous,” “bogus,” and
“hypo[critical].” He deplores the bureaucracy and inefficiency of the UN’s endless committees and reports, as well as the charade of member-governments that tout a green future but still rely on fossil fuels. In Foster’s
view, sustainability is “a concept hatched by a cabal of ardent socialists” (p. FP13). Is sustainability really this impractical? Could it be doomed to failure?
