Sutherland’s differential association theory

PART 1

In the course Intro Assignment, you were asked to write on the question: “What causes crime?” Copy and paste your answer into this assignment (you do not need to include the second part about the crime rate). Then, go through your previous intro assignment and highlight and discuss the theories you were talking about using the comment function of Microsoft Word. Be sure to include as much variety in your comments as you can. If you think your description could fit a few theories—describe them all within reason. As noted above, this is a cumulative assignment. This is your chance to show me how much you have learned throughout this course. (20 points)
Your comments should include:
• Which theory you were referencing
• The scholar associated with that theory (if a scholar was mentioned in class)
• Why this is referencing the theory/short description of the theory (including the tenants)

PART 2

After having now re-read your Intro Assignment, what do you think is the most important theory you did not include? Describe this theory and tell me why you think it is important to now include this in your discussion about the causes of crime. You should also explicitly tell me how your view on the causes of crime has changed as well as what information helped make your view change. (5 points)

PART 3

Sutherland’s differential association theory talks about professional thieves. What is a professional thief? What would Gottfredson and Hirschi think about the idea of someone being a professional thief (would they support or reject the idea and why)? What would Sutherland think about the idea of a professional thief (would he support or reject the idea and why)? (short answer 6 – 10 sentences) (5 points)
