The ‘Freshman Fifteen’

Jeffrey is a new Personal Training client who has come to you because he recently gained the ‘Freshman Fifteen’ when he was away at college and he wants to get ready for the beach. He wants to ‘get bigger’ and his current focus is on resistance training.
Jeffrey is convinced that ingesting protein consistently throughout the day will help him double his muscle mass once he starts working out ‘hard’ with you. The following is an example of a typical day for Jeffrey: Breakfast – 4 hard-boiled eggs with 4 pieces of turkey sausage. Lunch – Tuna salad mixed with mayo, on a bed of lettuce with tomatoes. Snack pre-workout – Protein bar and chocolate-peanut butter protein shake. Dinner- 2 chicken breasts, grilled with a side of spinach and half portion of brown rice. What feedback would you give him about his dietary choices? Please incorporate the appropriate energy systems he will be utilizing throughout his workouts, and the appropriate macronutrient fuel sources for them. (25 points)
You also encourage him to add some cardiorespiratory exercise, at least 40 minutes on the treadmill or elliptical within his Target Heart Rate zone. WHY did you make this recommendation? What energy system(s) will he utilize and what will fuel these workouts? (15 points)
He is considering taking a Creatine Phosphate supplement to help achieve his goals because he has heard that it ‘makes you stronger.’ How do you reply to this (be sure to respond from the viewpoint of a Personal Trainer, NOT as an individual opinion)? Could this potentially benefit him? What risks should he be aware of? (10 points)
