THE PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN: A GRAPHIC STUDY

• Take printed letters and cut each one out individually
• Create a composition with 8-12 letters for each principle of design = 8 total compositions
• As you arrange and manipulate the letters to demonstrate each principle of design, record
your ideas as ‘thumbnail sketches and/or collages’ in your journal. Digitally document the
finished compositions.
• Create a black and white only digital presentation (Adobe Illustrator or
PowerPoint, or other platform you are comfortable with) with each graphic
composition – include a title page
• On the final slide, take 2 compositions and overlap them to create an interesting graphic
that conveys the principles of balance, rhythm, and harmony
• Upload the 10 slide presentation as a PDF to FOL and eportfolio, blog/vlog/class Instagram
etc…
EVALUATION
An effective solution will show a strong understanding of each design principle, as well as a
well-documented design process / exploration of ideas within your journal as thumbnail
sketches/collages.
