***Discuss the role of self-interest maximization in contributing to the expansion of government. Voters tend to favor smaller government and reductions in spending as long as their own favorite programs are not cut. Citizens form advocacy groups to lobby for programs and benefits. Elected officials use less visible taxes and use diffused means of obtaining revenue to maintain the illusion that government benefits and services are without cost.
***Write a brief paper (one-two pages, three/four paragraphs) about which approach we should take in these situations. You should briefly defend your choice (growth and how to determine what growth or no growth and how to address needs) and explain why you would not choose the alternative.
