Overview:
This assignment will focus on organization and essay form, writing a focused thesis statement, analysis, establishing an academic tone. We are starting at the beginning here to practice the basic essay concepts. As we progress throughout the semester, the writing will become more complex as we build on our skills and apply what we’ve learned.
All assignments submitted as attachments MUST be formatted according to MLA guidelines.
Writing Prompt:
Choose three of your past writing experiences*. Each should be different and have a different audience. Analyze those three writing experiences in a two and a half to three page essay. Your analysis should include discussing the rhetorical situation, audience, purpose, and explanation of why you made the particular choices you did in order to effectively communicate with that particular audience
*Past writing experience simply means any writing you’ve done before this class. Have you written a letter or email, essay, poem, short story, text, journal, review, social media post, blog entry, etc.? Each example you use should be a different type of writing (in other words, three essays would not be appropriate but a past essay, email, and blog post would be appropriate for the assignment).
A successful essay will provide a quality analysis, be clear and concise, have an introduction that sets the reader up for what is to come and includes a thesis statement, three body paragraphs that develop the main ideas, and a conclusion paragraph that restates (not repeats) the thesis, sums up the main idea, and provides closure.
A successful essay will be well organized, use transitions to link ideas, establish a formal academic tone*, and avoid spelling and grammatical mistakes. The essay should be formatted using MLA guidelines and meet requirements for essays as established in the syllabus.
*Establishing a formal academic tone has to do with the language you use and the point of view from which you write. You may use first person point of view in this essay, however, you should always avoid using second person point of view. Also, avoid using casual language, slang, abbreviations, and contractions because they are very informal.
