  1. NYT video “National Identity is Made Up” – What is one point or example that stood out to you, and why? (25-75 words)
  2. Pettman – In the first two sections (“Making the State” and “Gendered States”), Pettman discusses how the development of the modern nation-state was tied to the idea of gendered “separate spheres.” From these two sections, make two comparative lists: one for public sphere and one for private sphere. Fill in these lists, thinking about who, activities, and characteristics for each. You should have at least 5 things in each list. (2 lists, at least 5 words in each)

NOTE: It is optional to read most of the section “Women and the State” (pp.176-178).
