Identity, Authenticity & Angel Complex

In this module we are considering Canadian Identity and Citizenship– as one of the aims of education, that also has an impact on another aim of education, individual flourishing .
We asked: What are the implications for accommodation of cultural identity and individual identity in schools?
The ideal of multicultural education requires explicit affirmation of minority identities be permitted in schools. They include bilingual and heritage language
programs to reinforce and encourage the flourishing of local languages and culture, not simply as a temporary transition bridge to help minority language
children to assimilate to larger English speaking culture.
What about students whose minority identity includes religion? The aims of multicultural programs are cultural recognition and survival. Consider symbolic
clothing, accommodation in schools for religious practices, celebration of traditions of dominant Christian majority?
Challenge of cultural recognition: Developing a child’s self understanding of their ancestral identity/culture cannot constitute imposition of some prior
version of the child’s identity. The notion of authenticity is that it prizes the individual’s ability to create and shape their own identity within a cultural
community or through a process of intercultural reflection and examination that may lead to a fusion of cultural horizons.
