Asheville gets on track (1886):
● Prior to the railroad expansion and its reaching the Appalachian region, Appalachia mainly relied on farming techniques to build its industry. However, with the tracks reaching Asheville, the farming industry started falling.
● Industrialization in Appalachia started with the introduction of railroad tracks in eastern Kentucky as its coalfields started becoming popular
● With the modernization of transportation, the extraction of Appalachian resources took off, such as the extraction of timber and coal which defined the starting point of the region’s industrial journey.
● In 1886 the tracks reached Asheville (a city in North Carolina), creating another hub in Appalachia, creating a shortcut from the rough terrain goods and people had to get through to reach there.
● The expansion also aided Asheville’s modernization in gathering people from all over the country. Where Battery Park Hotel was built, bringing in tourists to enjoy orchestra music, fine cuisine, and ballroom dancing. This set the standards of leisure Asheville held among high society.
● Asheville was no longer a crossroad for agriculture alone but became a hive attracting tourists, businessmen, and miners interested in the natural treasure found in the Appalachian region
