SOCIO-LINGUISTICS

TASK
Is sociolinguistics an objective science?
Being objective is a basic requirement in any science. The results you get should be reproduceable and reflect the ‘truth’. In addition, aspects such as choice of data, methods etc. should not be motivated by ‘hidden agendas’, i.e. that you want to get a particular result that reflects the particular view of the world or hypothesis that you want to represent. ‘Objectivity’ is of course almost impossible to achieve.
Using examples from studies you have read, discuss the question “Is sociolinguistics an objective science?”. In your discussion focus on aspects such as methods, the choice of subject, political agendas etc. and to what extent these affect results.
