Discussion 4 – Soils
In this chapter, you have learned how soils are formed, what nutrients they possess, and most
importantly how we use them to support the human population. As with all things, human activity has
impacted soil development and integrity, primarily through our agriculture industry. This discussion
will explore how a healthy soil supports a healthy ecosystem.
For this discussion activity, you will need to watch the video 100,000 Beating Hearts (available on
YouTube ad included in Module 10). Then discuss the following:
• Do you think what Will Harris did with his farm is feasible on a large scale? In other words,
could we replace industrial agricultural practices with this style of farming and still be able to
produce what the population needs? What would that do to the economy? Industrial ag is a big
business, but is detrimental to local economies – is restoring the local economy more
important? Is restoring soil quality important enough to take the economic risk?
• Will Harris talks about the incredible risk he took, as well as initially losing money when he
began the transition from an industrial farm to a sustainable farm. Do you think other farmers
are willing to take that risk? Even if they are willing, are they able to take that risk?
• Will Harris began this endeavor because he had heard of consumers wanting grass-fed beef.
What does that say about YOUR role in how the agriculture industry is run? How might a shift
in consumerism preferences cause a shift in the agriculture industry and ultimately affect the
economy? How does your preferences affect soil quality and the ecosystem?
